Eleanor Roosevelt, The United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
I watched a dvd last night of Eleanor Roosevelt in which her efforts as an appointed represenitive to the United Nations by President Truman after the Allied victory against the Fascist Axis powers in the second world war were strongly directed with much opposition to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Her excellent work led to the adoption of that declaration. \ Part of what it says is this:
"Everyone has the right ... to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers."
— Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19
and
WE HOLD THIS TRUTH THAT ALL HUMAN BEINGS ARE CREATED DIFFERENT.That every human being has the right to be mentally free and independent. That every human being has the right to feel, see, hear, sense, imagine, believe or experience anything at all, in any way, at any time. That every human being has the right to behave in any way that does not harm others or break fair and just laws. That no human being shall be subjected without consent to incarceration, restraint, punishment or psychological or medical intervention in an attempt to control, repress or alter the individual's thoughts, feelings or experiences.
— UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF MENTAL RIGHTS AND FREEDOMS
Today when these human democratic rights are being trampled on in the very homeland of freedom the United States it would do us all well to reexamine our hearts and what we really believe and put those beliefs into actual practice in all relations with our fellow humans.
"As George Orwell said, "During times of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."
Americans have always never failed to pass the hard and difficult test of defending revolutionary truth. Sadly even to, from and with our own leaders who seem to have little understanding of what being an American is.
Our president will be speaking at the United Nations today. Let's hope and pray he speaks for his nation and speaks truth. Americans despite the ascendency of the worst among us do truly subscribe to genuine Christian principles and no Christian principle I've ever heard condones Torture or War. Certainly not Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
